Morocco’s Human Rights Violation: Sahrawi Activist Denounces at UN International Silence

Sahrawi human rights activist, El Ghalia Djimi, condemned the current inaction and silence of the international community toward Morocco’s human rights violations in the occupied territories, calling for decisive pressure on Rabat to bring those responsible to justice.

During a recent session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Djimi underlined Morocco’s “continuous and systematic contempt” for implementing the recommendations made during previous Universal Periodic Reviews, especially concerning the humanitarian situation in Western Sahara.

Djimi said that “the inaction and silence of the international community only encourage the continuation of these serious violations.” The activist also stated that Morocco has failed to honor its fundamental commitments regarding the Sahrawi people’s inalienable rights to self-determination and independence, as well as freedoms of association, expression, and peaceful assembly.

The Sahrawi activist also emphasized that Sahrawi defenders and activists continue to be systematically deprived of these essential civil rights due to their political stances, describing the situation as “blatant discrimination that hinders the protection and promotion of human rights in a non-self-governing territory.”
