Algeria Urges Stronger UN-Arab League Partnership

Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, on Friday called for deepening the partnership between the United Nations Security Council and the Arab League to better promote peace and security in the Arab region.
Attaf made the appeal while taking part in an interactive dialogue between the Security Council and the Arab League in New York, held within the framework of cooperation between the UN and regional organizations as set out in Chapter VIII of the UN Charter.
He argued that closer coordination with regional bodies is “a pressing necessity” that can enhance the effectiveness of UN initiatives and strengthen the system of collective security.
Given the “difficult circumstances” in the Middle East, Attaf stressed that the Security Council must step up coordination with the Arab League, especially in the face of “the systematic aggression targeting the liquidation of the Palestinian cause and repeated attacks on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighboring states.”
The minister also underlined the need for joint UN-Arab efforts to accelerate peaceful settlements to other crises in the region, citing Sudan, Libya and Somalia as pressing cases.
