Former French President Sarkozy Found Guilty of Criminal Conspiracy

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been found guilty of criminal conspiracy for accepting millions of euros in illicit funds. However, the Paris criminal court acquitted him of passive corruption and illegal campaign financing. Sarkozy, who insists the case is politically driven, was accused of using illicit money to finance his 2007 election campaign.

Sarkozy’s wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, faces separate charges of concealing evidence in the same case, which she denies. Since leaving office in 2012, Sarkozy has faced multiple legal troubles, including a conviction in 2021 for attempting to bribe a judge and another in 2024 for overspending on his re-election campaign. In both cases, he avoided prison time, serving sentences at home under electronic monitoring.
