Hungary’s Foreign Minister Accuses EU of Interference Ahead of 2026 Elections

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto accused the European Union of ramping up political pressure on Budapest ahead of the country’s 2026 elections. Speaking on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly session, he said Brussels has consistently sought to undermine Hungary’s government since it first came to power in 2010.

“There is a constant pressure on us by the European Union. Brussels has been putting its pressure on since 2010, since we won the elections, so we got used to this feeling,” Szijjarto stated. He added that the pressure is increasing as Hungary prepares for next year’s vote.

According to the minister, EU officials aim to see Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government replaced by a compliant administration. “This pressure is growing because next year elections will take place in Hungary, and Brussels would like to kick us out, this government. This is obvious. They want a puppet government to seat in government offices,” he declared.
