Huawei Unveils World’s Most Powerful AI “Supernode” Built Without Nvidia Chips

Chinese tech giant Huawei on Thursday announced what it called the world’s most powerful “supernode” computer cluster, a system designed to deliver top-tier processing power without relying on Nvidia’s advanced chips, the South China Morning Post reported. The company said the cluster was built using domestic chipmaking techniques to bolster China’s independence in artificial intelligence computing.

Speaking at a conference in Shanghai, Huawei Deputy Chairman Xu Zhijun said the firm aims to establish a “supernode + cluster” solution based entirely on Chinese chip manufacturing processes to meet rapidly growing AI needs. He revealed that new Ascend AI chips will be rolled out over the next three years, starting with the Ascend 950PR in early 2026—timed to compete with Nvidia and AMD’s latest launches.

The announcement coincided with Beijing’s call for Chinese companies to stop buying Nvidia chips tailored for the Chinese market under U.S. export restrictions. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed disappointment at the move, while China’s Foreign Ministry reiterated opposition to “discriminatory practices” in global trade and technology. Under U.S. sanctions since 2019, Huawei has become central to China’s push for AI self-reliance, with its new supernode cluster connecting accelerators through ultra-fast interconnects to function as a unified high-performance system.
