EU and WFP Commend Algeria’s Role in Supporting Sahrawi Refugees

The Delegation of the European Union to Algeria and the World Food Programme (WFP) on Tuesday in Algiers praised Algeria’s role in meeting the needs of Sahrawi refugees in the Tindouf camps.
“For more than 50 years, Algeria has shown exemplary generosity in hosting Sahrawi refugees, and for nearly 40 years the WFP has stood alongside it, providing vital food and nutritional assistance,” said Aline Rumonge, WFP Representative and Country Director in Algeria, during an event aimed at reaffirming the EU Delegation’s commitment to Sahrawi refugees through continued funding to the UN agency.
Noting that 80% of Sahrawi refugees depend entirely on humanitarian aid, she also welcomed the EU’s unwavering support and commitment to this population, stressing that their “strong and reliable partnership provides the sustainable financing needed to deliver vital assistance while improving WFP’s operational efficiency in the camps.”
For his part, EU Ambassador to Algeria Diego Mellado Pascua highlighted Algeria’s generosity toward Sahrawi refugees over many years, while noting that just weeks ago the EU delivered a contribution of 5 million euros – under the second year of a multi-year partnership – as a reminder of Europeans’ commitment to the Sahrawi people.
Yahia Bouhbini, President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) Red Crescent, told APS the event was also an opportunity to call on all donors to contribute to supporting Sahrawi refugees.
