African Union: Algeria’s Presidency of CPS, Unwavering Commitment to Peace, Security

In line with the high instructions of the Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria devoted its presidency of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council for the month of August to addressing security issues that are at the top of the continent’s agenda and the promotion of appropriate and effective mechanisms to address the threats facing its peoples, as part of Algerian diplomacy’s constant and unwavering commitment to strengthening peace and security in Africa.

The Algerian presidency of the Peace and Security Council, through Algeria’s AU Ambassador and Permanent Representative Mohamed Khaled, has been marked by the holding of seven meetings at the level of permanent representatives, a meeting at the level of experts and the organization of a field mission to the Republic of South Sudan.

During its presidency, Algeria focused on strengthening consultations with AU structures involved in governance, peace, security and human rights, which led to the development of a joint roadmap for coordinating initiatives.

It also called on Member States to support the “Report on Governance in Africa,” whose forum of Heads of State and Government is chaired by the President of the Republic until February 2026.

On Algeria’s proposal, the council called on AU Commission, in coordination with the African Governance Architecture (AGA) platform, the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Democracy and Governance, and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), to develop a comprehensive matrix listing all AU legal frameworks relating to governance, human rights, peace and security.
