Algeria Pleads for Inclusive Consultation Process, Effective Peace Operations

Algeria’s UN permanent representative, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, called Tuesday for an “inclusive” consultation process to produce a comprehensive review that paves the way for adaptable, effective, and fit-for-purpose peace operations.
“We are at a crucial phase for UN peace operations due to a changing security landscape and challenging times for our organization,” Bendjama said in an address at a UN Security Council meeting on peacekeeping operations.
Recalling that the pact for the future set the tone last year by recommending a review of all peace operations, he called for “an inclusive consultation process to produce a comprehensive review that paves the way for adaptable, effective, and fit-for-purpose peace operations.”
The representative of Algeria highlighted a number of points, including the mandate, which “has to respond to a number of considerations to fulfil the expected requirements.”
“The starting point could be in the mandate renewal resolutions that this Council adopts on a regular basis, with sometimes, with too often, minor technical adjustments,” he said.
“This exercise should not be undertaken in disconnection with the situation on the ground and with the current efforts to improve the performance of UN peace operations.”
