Algeria and Germany’s PTB Discuss Strengthening Cooperation in Renewable Energy

ALGIERS – On the sidelines of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025), Algerian Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy, responsible for Renewable Energy, Noureddine Yassaa, received on Monday Carl Felix Wolff, the advisor specializing in international cooperation for the Middle East and North Africa region at the German Institute of Metrology (PTB), which is affiliated with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Algerian Ministry of Energy said in a statement.

This meeting provided an opportunity to explore ways to strengthen cooperation between the two parties, with a particular focus on enhancing the quality infrastructure required to develop the value chain in the field of renewable energy and green hydrogen and its derivatives, which is considered a promising new sector in the field of clean and sustainable energy, the statement said.

In this context, both sides commended the success of the previous cooperation between the German institute PTB and the Renewable Energy Development Center (CDER) under the framework of the project ” Strengthening of the Infrastructure Quality for Solar energy in the Maghreb.”

This collaboration “culminated in CDER obtaining accreditations in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard, particularly for the calibration laboratory for solar radiation measuring instruments (pyranometers) and the performance and reliability testing laboratory for solar thermal sensors. As a result, Algeria has emerged as a regional leader in the quality infrastructure for renewable energy at both the African and Arab levels,” the source added.

Moreover, both parties emphasized the importance of further developing cooperation in the areas of training, technical support, and inter-laboratory comparisons, in addition to organizing training sessions on standardization, calibration, and quality control in the fields of renewable energy and green hydrogen.

The discussion also touched on the potential to strengthen the capacities of Algerian institutions in providing quality infrastructure services prioritized for the green hydrogen sector. This would involve identifying key priorities along the green hydrogen value chain in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, enhancing the capabilities of specialized institutions to deliver these services, and raising awareness about the importance of quality infrastructure within the sector, the statement concluded.
