Xi Jinping Launches Global Governance Initiative at SCO Plus Summit in Tianjin

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday unveiled the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) at the “Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus” summit in Tianjin, highlighting the need for a more just and equitable international order. Addressing the extended meeting, which gathered SCO member states, dialogue partners, and observers, Xi said the world’s governance system “has come to a new crossroads” and called for collective efforts to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
Outlining the initiative, Xi urged SCO Plus nations to respect sovereign equality, uphold international law, strengthen multilateralism, and adopt people-centered approaches through concrete actions. He also stressed the importance of setting an example in promoting humanity’s shared values. As part of the plan, China pledged to provide medical support over the next five years to SCO nations, including treating 500 children with congenital heart disease, performing 5,000 cataract surgeries, and conducting 10,000 cancer screenings.
The Tianjin summit, the largest SCO gathering since its founding in 2001, brought together around 20 heads of state and government, as well as leaders of international organizations. The event marked China’s fifth time hosting the organization. Earlier in the day, SCO leaders adopted the Tianjin Declaration, committing to deeper cooperation in economic and security fields.
