UN Secretary-General Welcomes Creation of Two New AI Governance Mechanisms

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday welcomed the General Assembly’s decision to create two new mechanisms within the international body to strengthen global cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI).

According to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the initiatives — the UN Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and the Global Dialogue on AI Governance — represent “a significant step forward in global efforts to harness the benefits of artificial intelligence while addressing its risks.” The Global Dialogue will act as an inclusive platform for states and stakeholders to debate pressing AI-related issues, while the Scientific Panel will provide independent, research-based assessments to connect cutting-edge science with policy.

Dujarric said Guterres will soon launch an open call for nominations to the Scientific Panel, which will present annual reports at the Global Dialogue in Geneva in 2026 and New York in 2027. The Secretary-General urged all stakeholders to support the initiative, emphasizing that the aim is to build a future where artificial intelligence serves the common good of humanity.
