Russia Threatens to Block Norwegian Fishing Vessels in Tit-for-Tat Move

Russia has warned that it will impose retaliatory measures against Norwegian fishing vessels unless Norway reconsiders its position within one month, according to Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries.

Shestakov stated that if Oslo fails to adjust its stance, Moscow will close its exclusive economic zone to Norwegian fishing vessels. He added that future fisheries management and quota distribution in the Barents and Norwegian Seas will be determined solely by Russian national interests.

The warning comes after Norway introduced a fishing ban in July 2025 within its exclusive economic zone against two Russian companies. Moscow denounced the move as a gross violation of existing agreements on the joint management of aquatic biological resources.
