Denmark Summons US Diplomat Over New Greenland Allegations

Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, has summoned the top U.S. diplomat in Copenhagen following a media report claiming that American nationals linked to President Donald Trump are attempting to infiltrate Greenland and run covert influence operations there.

Rasmussen told Ritzau news agency that while it was not surprising to hear of foreign attempts to sway Greenland — a semi-autonomous Danish territory Trump has previously expressed interest in acquiring for U.S. national security reasons — any such interference would be “unacceptable.” He confirmed that the American chargé d’affaires had been called in for a meeting to address the matter.

The Danish outlet DR reported that at least three U.S. nationals with close ties to Trump were engaged in these operations, citing eight anonymous sources in Denmark and the U.S., including government officials. The revelations risk straining diplomatic relations between Copenhagen and Washington, reviving sensitivities around Trump’s past proposal to purchase Greenland.
