Lightning Strikes Kill at Least 33 People in Northeast India

Authorities reported on Friday that at least 33 people have lost their lives and dozens more have been injured due to lightning strikes during severe thunderstorms over the past two days in Bihar, a state in northeastern India.

Most victims were struck by lightning while working in the fields, according to Vijay Kumar Mandal, head of the local emergency management department.

Bihar officials noted that lightning resulted in the deaths of at least 243 people in 2024 and 275 the previous year within the state.

Each year, eastern India faces significant flooding during the summer monsoon season (June to September), leading to numerous fatalities and displacing hundreds of thousands of individuals.

Scientists have indicated that global warming is exacerbating the severity and frequency of these climatic events.
