7th Edition of the International Festival “Algé’Rire” Opens in Algiers

The 7th edition of the International Festival “Algé’Rire” commenced Thursday evening in Algiers, showcasing performances by a dozen stand-up comedians from Algeria and beyond, in front of an enthusiastic audience.

Running from July 17 to 19 at the “Boualem-Bessaïh” Opera House for its opening night, and continuing at the “Mahieddine-Bachtarzi” National Theater (TNA) for the final two evenings, this year’s festival is themed “Dz Spirit.”

The energetic crowd at the Boualem-Bessaïh Opera House actively engaged with the lineup of comedians during the inaugural gala, which was presented and directed by satirist Farid Chamekh.

Notable performers included the renowned Abdelkader Secteur, Youness Hanifi, Ayoub Marceau, Merwane Benlazar, Juste Inès, Farès Barket, Mouaadh Bennacer, and Charly Nyobe from Cameroon, all of whom delighted the audience and received warm applause.

The comedians expressed their collective joy at performing in Algiers before such a welcoming audience. For over two hours, they tackled various themes inspired by society and everyday life, covering topics such as job interviews, the dynamics between comedians and producers, cosmetic surgery, and affectionate nicknames among couples.

This edition of the festival, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Arts, aims to “highlight Algerian, African, and international humor” through the participation of esteemed Algerian and global stand-up comedians, as emphasized by Tarek Oulhadj, co-founder of the festival, during a press conference following the show.

In addition to the performances, the organizers have arranged masterclasses led by industry professionals to mentor and support emerging comedians.

Since its inception in 2013 by “Broshing Events,” this international festival has consistently attracted hundreds of spectators each year.

The 7th edition of the International Festival “Algé’Rire” will continue on Friday and Saturday at the TNA, featuring another impressive lineup of comedians, including Djawad Tourabi, Slimane Driss, and the Algé’Rire Troupe.
