Deadly Hypermarket Fire in Iraq’s al-Kut City Kills at Least 60, More Missing

BAGHDAD — At least 60 people have died and 11 remain missing following a massive fire that engulfed a hypermarket in the eastern Iraqi city of al-Kut, according to local health authorities and police sources. The fire broke out overnight in a five-storey commercial building, with dramatic footage circulating online showing firefighters battling intense flames through the night.
City officials confirmed that 59 victims have been identified, while one body remains unidentifiable due to severe burns. “We have more bodies that have not been recovered still under fire debris,” said Ali al-Mayahi, a local city official. Efforts are ongoing to search the wreckage for further casualties.
The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. However, the governor of the province stated that preliminary findings from an investigation would be announced within 48 hours. Legal action has already been initiated against the owner of the building and the shopping center, the state news agency INA reported.
