Algeria Launches Local Branch of Clim-Gov2 Project to Strengthen Climate Adaptation

ALGIERS – The Algerian Ministry of Environment and Life Quality  launched on Tuesday, in Algiers, the local branch of the Climate Governance project (Clim-Gov2), relating to strengthening adaptation to climate change, within the framework of supporting the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, in partnership with several international organizations.

The launch ceremony took place in the presence of the Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Nadjiba Djilali, the Minister of the Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-enterprises, Noureddine Ouadah, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Mellado Pascua, the German Ambassador to Algeria, Georg Felsheim, and representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Industry and Interior, as well as the German Agency for International Cooperation.

This project, funded by EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, aims to support the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement in Algeria, by strengthening national capacities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing adaptation mechanisms to face the negative impacts of climate change.

The project operates through five core pillars: climate governance, climate change adaptation, emissions mitigation, climate financing and the regional approach, by encouraging women’s initiatives in the green economy and strengthening the role of civil society and scientific research.

In her speech, Djilali emphasized that the launch of this project represents “a new stage in Algeria’s commitment to climate and environmental issues,” describing it as “an additional milestone” in the environmental transition process adopted by Algeria as a strategic choice, in accordance with its international commitments, particularly the Paris Agreement.

The minister underlined that this project constituted a tool for implementing national policy regarding environmental protection and achieving sustainable development, adding that it is a lever for improving living standards, through supporting local communities and strengthening the participation of women and youth.

She underlined that the first phase of the project, which had enabled the development of local climate plans in several provinces, was “a promising and successful experience” that allowed local actors to integrate the climate dimension into public policies, adding that the new phase will concern five pilot provinces, namely Blida, Chlef, Djelfa, Guelma and Tissemsilt.

For his part, the Minister of the Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises, Noureddine Ouadah highlighted the economic dimension of the environment, through the involvement of micro-enterprises and startups in environmental projects, emphasizing that innovation and technology constitute essential pillars for improving quality of life and creating added value for the national economy.

For his part, the German Ambassador, Georg Felsheim, welcomed the existing partnership between Algeria and Germany in the field of environment, reaffirming his country’s commitment to continue its support for Algeria’s efforts in facing climate change challenges.

EU Ambassador, Diego Mellado, highlighted the importance of the project in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, calling for intensified coordination and unification of efforts to achieve common climate objectives.
