Algeria : Injured Sailor Airlifted from Portuguese Ship in Emergency Operation at Bejaia

ALGIERS — The Coast Guard under the Naval Forces Command conducted an emergency medical evacuation Monday evening of a sailor injured in an accident aboard a Portuguese-flagged commercial vessel traveling from Türkiye to Algeria, according to a Tuesday statement from the Ministry of National Defense.

“Following receipt by the National Center for Maritime Surveillance and Rescue Operations of the National Coast Guard Service of the Naval Forces Command of an emergency medical evacuation request from the Portuguese-flagged commercial vessel PERSEUS traveling from Türkiye to Algeria, located 27 nautical miles north of Bejaia, at 21:32 on Monday, July 7, 2025, the request concerned a crew member who had been injured in an accident,” the same source said.

“Accordingly, in coordination with the Regional Center for Maritime Surveillance and Rescue Operations of the 5th Military Region, a maritime medical evacuation operation was immediately initiated, deploying the AS-16 Search and Rescue helicopter from the 560th Search and Rescue Helicopter Squadron,” noted the same source adding that “the injured sailor was immediately evacuated to Bejaia airport and then transferred by Civil Protection personnel to Khalil Amrane Hospital in Bejaia to receive necessary medical care.”

“This operation is part of humanitarian missions of Coast Guard units of Naval Forces Command, mirroring their ongoing efforts and unwavering commitment to intervene to save human lives at sea under any circumstances,” the statement concluded.
