Algeria Warns of Catastrophic Situation for Gaza Children, Demands Vigorous Crisis Response

NEW YORK (United Nations) — Algeria’s permanent representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, warned Wednesday in New York about the catastrophic situation facing children in Gaza, demanding a “more vigorous” response to the unprecedented crisis engulfing the Palestinian territory.
“The report before us explicitly highlighted Israel as responsible of the highest levels of grave violation in 2024. Despite the dire situation in Gaza, the catastrophic situation in Gaza, the office of the SRSG response have been strikingly insufficient,” he said before the members of the Security Council during the annual public debate on violations of children’s rights in times of armed conflicts.
Bendjama said that the representative issued “remarkably few public statements regarding the situation of children in Gaza,” wondering “how can we ignore the 7,188 verified grave violations attributed” to Zionist forces.
He said that these figures include “over 2000 verified cases of killing and maiming.” He added, “How can we ignore this figure which includes more than 500 verified attacks on schools and 148 reported attacks on hospitals?” as well as “over 5,000 verified cases of denied humanitarian assistance in the West Bank and 2,263 in Gaza alone.”
“These are only the verified violation by the office of the special representative. For sure, the reality is far worse,” he said.
The Algerian representative further noted that children in Gaza no longer have access to water and sanitation due to damage or destruction of essential systems
