ASEAN Welcomes Algeria’s Upcoming Accession to Treaty of Amity and Cooperation

The member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have expressed their satisfaction with Algeria’s upcoming accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), highlighting the treaty’s continued relevance in promoting regional peace and stability.

In the final communiqué issued at the conclusion of the 46th ASEAN Summit, held in Kuala Lumpur on May 26–27 under the chairmanship of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, ASEAN member countries welcomed the impending membership of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the TAC.

“We, the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, are pleased with the upcoming accession of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia,” the communiqué stated.

The ASEAN nations reaffirmed the enduring relevance of the TAC as a fundamental code of conduct governing inter-state relations in the region and emphasized its crucial role in maintaining peace and regional stability. They encouraged all High Contracting Parties (HCPs) to honor their obligations under the treaty.

Furthermore, the member countries reiterated their commitment to upholding and promoting the principles of the TAC and enhancing its significance both within and beyond the region. They also welcomed the growing interest of non-regional countries in joining the treaty in alignment with its objectives and principles.

The second edition of the Conference of High Contracting Parties to the TAC is scheduled to take place in August 2025 at the ASEAN Secretariat. The meeting will form part of the preparations for the 50th anniversary of the TAC in 2026. In this context, ASEAN members voiced hope for the successful adoption of a resolution, sponsored by ASEAN, to commemorate the treaty’s milestone anniversary during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
