Spain Urges Global Support for UN Resolution Condemning Zionist Blockade on Gaza

Spain on Thursday called on countries around the world to back a United Nations resolution it drafted, which denounces Zionist blockade of the Gaza Strip and the ongoing aggression in the Palestinian territories.

“We want all nations to speak out against the inhumane blockade that Israel is imposing on the Gaza Strip – a blockade on humanitarian aid, on food, on medicine,” said Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares in an interview with RTVE ahead of the UN General Assembly vote. He stressed the need for global unity to denounce a war “that has no aim other than causing death and suffering and turning Gaza into a giant cemetery.”

The resolution, jointly introduced by Spain and Palestine, comes in response to what diplomats described as the UN Security Council’s “inaction” regarding the crisis in Gaza, according to the Spanish newspaper El Diario. The draft text calls for a “realistic and viable” Palestinian state that includes Gaza, while also condemning illegal Zionist settlements in the occupied West Bank, where violence continues daily.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez previously invited Arab states to join efforts to ensure the resolution’s passage. Speaking at the Arab League Summit in Baghdad, he said: “Palestine is bleeding to death before our eyes. In the face of violence and barbarism, only the staunch defense of a world order where justice prevails is possible.” Spain, which formally recognized Palestine last year, has also urged the upcoming June 16 UN meeting to serve as a platform for wider recognition of Palestinian statehood.
