Algeria, Syria Deepen Energy Cooperation with New Technical Support, Training Programs

Algiers – Algerian Minister of State, Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, held a telephone discussion on Wednesday with Syrian Minister of Energy, Mohammad Al-Bachir, focusing on ways to enhance and expand bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, according to a statement from the Algerian ministry.
The call followed up on the outcomes of the visit made on February 8 to Damascus by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, who was acting as a special envoy of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. During the discussion, both sides explored collaboration in electricity production, transport, and distribution, as well as maintenance of electrical networks and equipment.
Highlighting the strategic nature of their cooperation and the deep historical bonds between Algeria and Syria, the two ministers welcomed the strong fraternal ties linking their nations. In line with President Tebboune’s directives, Algeria will send a team of engineers and technicians from the Sonelgaz group to Syria to assess the country’s electricity sector, identify challenges, and propose a detailed action plan to support infrastructure and maintenance needs.
Arkab also expressed Algeria’s readiness to host Syrian technicians in specialized training programs in electricity and gas, facilitated by Sonelgaz institutes. Both sides affirmed their shared commitment to broaden cooperation to include hydrocarbons, mining, and renewable energy, aiming to translate this partnership into concrete and sustainable development projects.
The ministers agreed on the importance of increasing visits between experts and relevant companies and activating mechanisms for technical knowledge exchange to strengthen capabilities and establish effective on-ground partnerships.
