Sudan: Discovery of Mass Graves South of Omdurman (Army)

The Sudanese armed forces announced on Thursday the discovery of mass graves containing 465 bodies in the Al-Salha area during a demining operation in the southern regions of Omdurman, adjacent to the capital, Khartoum.

In their statement, the armed forces reported that they had liberated a substantial number of citizens and retired members of the regular forces who had been detained by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). These individuals were held in a school in the Al-Salha area, where they were reportedly used as human shields under inhumane conditions.

The armed forces disclosed that 648 citizens had been arrested, with 465 having died due to neglect, lack of food, medical care, and medication. Many of these victims were buried in mass graves, some containing over 27 bodies.

This revelation follows the Sudanese army’s announcement on Tuesday that it had completed the “cleansing” of RSF forces in Khartoum State, located in central Sudan, after regaining control of the Al-Salha area, the last stronghold of the RSF in Omdurman.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a conflict between the government army and the RSF, resulting in one of the worst humanitarian crises ever recorded globally. According to the United Nations, tens of thousands have lost their lives, and more than 14 million people have been displaced.
