Algeria’s Arkab Explores Cooperation with Suriname’s Vice President Advisor

Mohamed Arkab, the Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, met at his ministry’s headquarters with Anwar Lall Mohamed, advisor to the Vice President of the Republic of Suriname and acting governor on the Board of Governors of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). This meeting coincides with Mohamed’s visit to Algeria for the IDB’s annual meetings, taking place from May 19 to 22, as stated in a press release.
The meeting, held on Monday, was also attended by Karima Tafer, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy, in charge of Mines, along with various officials from the ministry.
During their discussions, they exchanged views on opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Suriname, particularly within the energy sector, including hydrocarbons, as well as in the production and marketing of fertilizers—areas where both countries hold significant potential.
Anwar Lall Mohamed expressed Suriname’s keen interest in strengthening ties with Algeria, commending the expertise that Algeria offers in the energy sector. He emphasized his government’s desire to benefit from this expertise, particularly through partnerships with Sonatrach focusing on training and skills development in the hydrocarbons sector, especially in light of recent oil and gas discoveries in Suriname.
The Surinamese official also highlighted the importance of developing collaboration with Algeria in fertilizer production and marketing, given Algeria’s experience and its regional prominence in this strategic field.
In response, Minister Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting Suriname through Sonatrach, aiming to assist in enhancing its capabilities in the hydrocarbons sector. This support may include training programs and the transfer of successful expertise and practices.
Furthermore, the Minister of State underscored the significance of reinforcing South-South cooperation to achieve sustainable development that benefits both nations.
