Pope Leo XIV Thanks President Tebboune and Expresses Interest in Visiting Algeria

As part of his participation in the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled for Sunday, May 18, 2025, Rachid Bladehane , in his capacity as Algeria’s Ambassador to the Holy See, took part today in the ceremony held for ambassadors accredited to the Vatican, as stated in a communiqué issued Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs.

On this occasion, Ambassador Bladehane “conveyed once again the warm congratulations of the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to Pope Leo XIV on his election as head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State,” according to the communiqué.

Ambassador Bladehane also affirmed that “the President of the Republic has made the triad of “Peace – Justice – Truth” the cornerstone of his policies at the national, regional, and international levels,” the communiqué added.

During the meeting, Pope Leo XIV entrusted Ambassador Bladehane with conveying his “heartfelt thanks to President Tebboune for the message of congratulations he received from him, expressing his sincere wish to visit Algeria — the land where Saint Augustine was born.” The Pope “proudly declared in his first speech after his election that he considers himself one of Augustine’s spiritual sons,” as stated in the same source.
