Yamal’s Brilliance Seals Barcelona’s 28th La Liga Title

A stunning strike from Lamine Yamal helped Barcelona secure the La Liga title with a 2-0 victory over local rivals Espanyol on Thursday, ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s goal, along with Fermin Lopez’s late effort, put Barcelona seven points clear with two matches remaining, clinching their 28th title and completing a domestic treble.
This victory marked Barcelona’s second league title in six years, celebrated at Espanyol’s ground, reminiscent of their 2023 triumph. Unlike last year, when angry home supporters chased celebrating players off the field, this time Espanyol turned on the sprinklers to soak the jubilant visitors.
Yamal opened the scoring in the 53rd minute with a brilliant curling shot, reminiscent of his goal for Spain in the Euro 2024 semi-finals. Lopez sealed the win in the 95th minute. “It’s time to celebrate,” said Barca coach Hansi Flick, who emphasized the need for continuous improvement from his team.
Barcelona had been close to sealing the title the previous day, but Real Madrid’s last-minute winner against Mallorca delayed the celebration.
Despite a slow start, Barcelona dominated possession, with Yamal’s goal breaking the deadlock. Espanyol’s Leandro Cabrera was sent off for an elbow on Yamal, making it easier for Barcelona to control the game. Lopez’s goal prompted bottle-throwing from Espanyol fans, but the young Barcelona squad celebrated their hard-fought title, reflecting on a season that defied expectations.
