Iran to Sue Google Over ‘Persian Gulf’ Name Distortion

The National Virtual Space Center of Iran has announced plans to take legal action against Google and other international platforms for distorting the historical name of the Persian Gulf. Spokesman Hossein Dalirian described the move as a response to what he called a deliberate falsification of a well-established geographical and historical fact.

Dalirian pointed out that recent usage of fabricated terms in place of “Persian Gulf” by platforms like Google had sparked widespread outrage among the Iranian public and even international observers. He underscored that the term “Persian Gulf” has been consistently used for millennia in maps, documents, and treaties, and is officially recognized by institutions such as the UN Group of Experts on Geographical Names under UN ECOSOC Resolution 715.

Calling the use of alternative names a violation of Iran’s national identity and a breach of Article 19(3) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Dalirian said the center would soon convene a legal consultation with experts and officials to determine the next steps.
