Greece: Over 40 Million Tourists in 2024

The number of tourists visiting Greece in 2024 reached 40.7 million, reflecting a 12.8% increase compared to 2023. Revenue from the tourism sector also experienced a year-on-year rise of 4.8%, as reported by the Bank of Greece (BoG).

Most tourists came from the 27 member countries of the European Union, making up 53.5% of the total—a figure that represents an 11% increase from the previous year.

“This growth can be attributed to a 12.2% increase in traveler traffic from Eurozone countries, totaling 14.5 million, along with an 8.6% rise in visitors from EU-27 nations outside the Eurozone,” clarified the BoG statement.

“In 2024, the surplus in the tourism balance of payments recorded a 3.4% year-on-year increase,” according to the final figures released by the BoG.

Tourism revenue for 2024 amounted to €21.592 billion, marking a 4.8% increase from 2023. This growth was primarily driven by a 7.1% boost in earnings from residents of the 27 EU countries, which accounted for 55.4% of total revenues.

Revenue from non-EU nationals also saw a modest increase of 0.6% year-on-year. Earnings from Italy surged by 13.6%, followed by Germany with a 3.7% rise; however, revenue from France declined by 11.6% during the same period.
