Aminatou Haidar Joins Global Campaign to Free Sahrawi Political Prisoners

Human rights activist and president of the Sahrawi Body Against Moroccan Occupation, Aminatou Haidar, has declared her participation in a national and international campaign aimed at securing the release of Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan prisons. The campaign, which began on March 30 in France, passed through Spain and reached the Moroccan city of Kenitra, where many Sahrawi detainees are incarcerated.

In an exclusive interview with Sahrawi TV, Haidar explained that the campaign was launched amid heightened repression in the occupied Sahrawi territories by the Moroccan authorities. She denounced what she described as Morocco’s systematic suppression of public freedoms and its continued policy of barring international observers from entering the occupied territories, fearing international exposure of its abuses.

Haidar emphasized that the campaign’s objectives are both humanitarian and political: to demand the immediate and unconditional release of Sahrawi political prisoners and to denounce Morocco’s broader policy of erasing Sahrawi identity and resistance. She condemned recent actions by Moroccan forces, including the destruction of Sahrawi homes, which she described as part of a broader campaign of repression carried out under a veil of international silence.

Calling for urgent international intervention, Haidar reiterated that the Sahrawi cause remains a decolonization issue and placed responsibility squarely on the United Nations, accusing the organization of complicity in Morocco’s occupation. She concluded with a call for unity among the Sahrawi people and renewed support for the Polisario Front, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to freedom and independence.
