
Algerian athlete Ameur Abdennour clinched the gold medal in the men’s 20 km walk on Wednesday, inaugurating the 24th edition of the Arab Athletics Championship, which is being held in Oran, located in western Algeria, from April 30 to May 4, 2025.
Abdennour completed the race, held at the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Stadium annex in Oran, with a time of 1 hour, 24 minutes, and 26 seconds. He finished ahead of Egypt’s Islam Abed Tawab, who recorded a time of 1 hour, 25 minutes, and 9 seconds. Another Algerian, Abderrahmane Aloui Souheil, secured the bronze medal, finishing in 1 hour, 27 minutes, and 37 seconds.
In a statement to the press, Ameur Abdennour expressed his happiness and pride at earning Algeria’s first gold medal in this championship, expressing hope that the Algerian athletes competing in the event would achieve further success in various disciplines.
In the women’s 10 km walk, Algerian athlete Souad Azzi won the silver medal with a time of 46 minutes, 4 seconds, and 7 tenths. Tunisia’s Imen Saai took home the gold medal, finishing the race in 45 minutes, 39 seconds, and 55 hundredths. Another Algerian competitor, Melissa Touloum, claimed the bronze medal with a time of 47 minutes, 38 seconds, and 97 hundredths.
The evening session of the opening day will feature seven finals, including events in the triple jump, high jump, men’s shot put, javelin throw, and women’s long jump, along with long-distance races of 5000 meters for women and 10,000 meters for men.
