African Union Lifts Sanctions Against Gabon Following Successful Political Transition

The African Union (AU) declared on Wednesday that it has removed sanctions against Gabon, a Central African nation that was suspended from the organization following the unconstitutional ousting of President Ali Bongo Ondimba in August 2023.

During a meeting of the AU’s Peace and Security Council (PSC), which focused on the political transition in Gabon, the Council reviewed the processes involved and deemed them to be largely successful, according to a statement released on social media.

“The PSC has therefore decided to immediately lift the sanctions imposed on Gabon” and has invited the country to “to immediately resume her participation in the activities,” the statement further emphasized.
