Russia Accounts for 45% of Global Diamond Reserves (Ministry)

According to a statement released by the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and reported by the news agency TASS, Russia is home to up to 45% of the world’s diamond reserves, with over 80% of these located in the Far East.

The ministry disclosed that there are 81 primary diamond deposits throughout the country, totaling approximately 982.4 million carats. Additionally, there are 39 technological deposits—formed from mining waste—that contain an extra 25,800 carats.

“More than 80% of all natural diamond reserves in the country can be found in the Far East, particularly in Yakutia,” the report specified, adding that nearly 20% are situated in the northwest, specifically in the Arkhangelsk region.

“Only placer deposits have been identified in Siberia and the Volga Federal District,” stated Alexander Kozlov, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, as quoted in the announcement.

At present, 135 licenses have been granted in Russia for the exploration, surveying, and extraction of diamond-bearing underground plots.

“Fourteen deposits are currently being prepared for development, with production expected to commence at one of the deposits in Yakutia as early as 2025,” the ministry concluded.
