Canadian PM Calls Trump’s Tariff Pause a ‘Welcome Reprieve’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hailed US President Donald Trump’s decision to pause sweeping tariffs as a “welcome reprieve” for the global economy, emphasizing its potential to stabilize cross-border economic ties.

In a post on X on Wednesday evening, Carney noted that the announcement would help reinforce economic relations between Canada and the United States. He added that following the Canadian federal election, both governments would begin formal negotiations to forge a new economic and security partnership.

“As part of today’s announcement, the President has signalled that the US will engage in bilateral negotiations with a number of other countries. This will likely result in a fundamental restructuring of the global trading system,” Carney said.

He stressed the importance of the upcoming election, arguing that it would determine who is best positioned to advocate for Canadian interests in these critical talks. “The stakes have never been higher,” he warned, vowing to earn the trust of Canadians to guide the country through this moment.

On Wednesday, Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs for many countries around the world. China was excluded from the pause, with the US instead raising the tariff rate on Chinese imports to 125%. Stock markets responded positively, surging after news of the global reprieve.
