UN Security Council Urged to Act on Gaza Aggression (Bendjama)

Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, declared in New York that the Security Council must fully assume its responsibilities and ensure the enforcement of its decisions to put an end to the violent aggression against the Gaza Strip. He emphasized that failure to adopt this approach would result in a complete loss of credibility for this UN body.
During his address on Thursday at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council regarding Palestine, convened at Algeria’s request, Bendjama stressed the need for the Council to communicate with “clarity and firmness” and to enforce all its resolutions to stop the massacres committed by the occupying power against Palestinian civilians. Otherwise, he warned, the Council risks losing all credibility.
The Algerian diplomat highlighted the unbearable suffering of Palestinians in Gaza due to the ongoing war waged by the occupying forces, who have not only killed civilians but have also targeted humanitarian workers, medical personnel, journalists, and children.
He reported that since October 7, 2023, the toll from the aggression against the Gaza Strip includes 400 humanitarian workers, 209 journalists, and 1,060 health staff killed, along with the tragic loss of 17,000 children, stressing that “these individuals deserve justice.”
“Murder has become a daily reality for the people of Gaza, witnessed by a global community that observes this genocide in utter silence,” he lamented.
Bendjama further noted that the occupiers have blocked humanitarian aid from reaching the Gaza Strip for over a month, stating, “as if the massacres were not enough.” He added that “what is happening in Gaza is absolute horror, and this criminal behavior must not go unanswered.”
In this context, he called for the immediate and full implementation of UN Resolution 2735 to save lives and promptly end the aggression.
Addressing the situation in the occupied West Bank, the Algerian diplomat reported an increase in incidents involving destruction, annexation, arrests, forced displacements, and assassinations carried out by the occupying forces as they attempt to gain total control over Palestinian territories.
He indicated that colonization policies continue unabated, noting that over the past year alone, the occupiers have seized 46 square kilometers of land in the West Bank while continuing their assaults on Al-Aqsa Mosque, defying established historical and legal norms.
Thus, Bendjama asserted that Algeria “condemns all these acts with the utmost severity,” adding, “History has taught us that no force can uproot a people from their land. The Palestinian people will not be displaced; they will remain on their land, and with the support of all those who cherish freedom and peace, they will establish their independent state with Al-Quds as its capital.”
