Myanmar: Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 3,003

The death toll from the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar last Friday has risen to at least 3,003, according to the information team of the State Administration Council.

This source reported that the earthquake also resulted in 4,515 injuries, with 351 individuals still unaccounted for. A previous report had indicated 2,800 fatalities.

Myo Nyunt, president of the Myanmar Red Cross Society, stated that the primary challenges facing current relief operations include damage assessment and logistical coordination. Due to security concerns in the affected areas, rescue teams have encountered significant difficulties in distributing aid, further exacerbated by a notable shortage of heavy machinery, Myo Nyunt added.

This unprecedented earthquake, the most severe in several decades, has also caused chaos up to 1,000 kilometers away from the epicenter. In Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, at least 19 people lost their lives, primarily due to the collapse of a 30-story building under construction.
