7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Central Myanmar

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck central Myanmar on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake hit an area 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing at a depth of 10 kilometers at approximately 06:20 GMT, the USGS reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage, but the tremor caused buildings to shake.

The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported the magnitude at 7.9, according to China’s Xinhua news agency.

Residents of Yunnan province in southwestern China felt the tremors caused by the earthquake in Myanmar, Beijing’s Earthquake Agency reported.

In Thailand, residents of the capital, Bangkok, rushed to the streets after feeling the tremors. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced an “emergency meeting” following the earthquake.
