Germany Pushes for Stronger EU Defense Strategy Amid Rising Global Tensions

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has urged the European Union to adopt a unified defense strategy, emphasizing the need for increased military spending and deeper coordination among member states. Speaking at the EUROPE 2025 conference in Berlin, Pistorius warned that the global order is under threat and that Europe must be able to act decisively from a position of strength.

Pistorius outlined three key priorities for strengthening EU defense capabilities. First, he called for a significant boost in military funding within the next EU budget. Second, he proposed streamlining certification procedures for defense procurements, arguing that deregulation is necessary to enhance efficiency. Lastly, he stressed the importance of stronger coordination among EU nations to ensure a cohesive approach to security.

The German minister also reiterated the critical role of supporting Ukraine, describing it as essential for Europe’s long-term security. He assured that Germany is committed to taking greater responsibility in European defense, reinforcing its role in maintaining stability amid growing geopolitical challenges.
