Konstantinos Tasoulas Sworn in as Greece’s New President

Former Greek Parliament Speaker Konstantinos Tasoulas was sworn in as the country’s new president on Thursday, succeeding Katerina Sakellaropoulou, whose term ended this month, according to media reports.
Tasoulas, 66, was elected president on February 12 with a majority of 160 votes in the 300-seat Parliament, supported primarily by his center-right ruling party, New Democracy.
A law graduate from the University of Athens, Tasoulas first entered Parliament in 2000 and was re-elected multiple times in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2023. He previously served as Deputy Minister of Defense (2007-2009) and Minister of Culture and Sports (2014-2015) before becoming Speaker of Parliament in 2019, a position he held until his recent election as president.
In Greece, the presidency is largely a ceremonial role.
