United States Tightens Stay Rules for Canadians

WASHINGTON, March 12, 2025 – Canadians who remain in the United States for more than a month will soon be required to register with U.S. authorities, according to a new regulation published on Wednesday.
This rule, which appeared in the official U.S. journal, enforces an executive order issued by President Donald Trump and enhances the enforcement of an existing law from which Canadians were previously exempt.
The regulation is set to take effect on April 11. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimates that it will impact “between 2.2 and 3.2 million” individuals, including “Canadian visitors who entered the United States through land border crossings and were not given proof of registration.”
