Algeria Voices Deep Concern Over Palestinian Suffering at UN Security Council

NEW YORK (UN) – Algeria expressed on Tuesday, in New York, through the voice of its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, its “deep concern” about the situation in occupied Palestinian territories and the ceaseless struggles endured by the Palestinian people owing to the Zionist occupier.
In his speech during an annual briefing of the United Nations Security Council on cooperation between the United Nations and the European Union (EU), under the agenda item “Cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations for the maintenance of international peace and security,” Bendjama said that Algeria is “deeply concerned” about the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and “by the ongoing suffering endured by Palestinian civilians.”
In this regard, he praised “the efforts of the EU to alleviate this suffering, as well as its commitment to a just and lasting resolution of the Palestinian issue, in accordance with internationally recognized references,” namely the implementation of the two-state solution.
Today’s meeting is taking place “at a time when the world is facing multifaceted and interconnected crises requiring a coordinated and multilateral response,” he added, stressing that “the level of complexity of these challenges highlights the need for enhanced cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations, as convened in Chapter VIII of the United Nations Charter.”
Referring to the cooperation between the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU), Bendjama said that it “remains the cornerstone of joint efforts in addressing crises and building lasting peace.”
He further welcomed the EU’s consistent support for the AU’s peace support operations, calling on it to continue these efforts in favor of these vital initiatives, which help address security challenges in Africa.
Regarding the Ukrainian crisis, Bendjama emphasized “the importance of prioritizing the diplomatic efforts and preparing the ground for an inclusive and constructive dialogue between the parties, with the aim of reaching a negotiated solution to the conflict, based on the principles of the United Nations Charter.”
