European Union Provides 44 Tons of Humanitarian Aid to Conflict-Stricken Eastern DR Congo

The European Union’s Special Representative for the Great Lakes region, Johan Borgstam, has announced a shipment of 44 tons of humanitarian aid to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to local media reports.

During his visit to Kinshasa, Borgstam met with President Félix Tshisekedi and confirmed that the EU was delivering humanitarian assistance to victims of violence in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. “The convoy carrying 44 tons of aid is already on its way to Goma,” he stated.

The meeting primarily focused on the ongoing security crisis in eastern DRC, particularly the resurgence of armed groups such as the Congo River Alliance (AFC) and the March 23 Movement (M23).

The M23 rebel group, originally formed in 2012 by defectors from the Congolese army, had briefly gained power before being defeated in 2013 by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC), with support from UN peacekeeping forces (MONUSCO). However, the M23 resumed its military activities in 2022, capturing several areas in North Kivu, a region bordering Rwanda and Uganda.

The renewed violence has resulted in mass displacement, severe humanitarian crises, and ongoing instability. The EU’s aid initiative aims to alleviate the suffering of civilians caught in the conflict, as international efforts to restore peace in the region continue.
