UN Refugee Chief Urges Europe to Protect Humanitarian Aid Amid Defense Budget Hikes

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, urged European leaders on Wednesday to safeguard humanitarian aid funding as they consider ramping up defense spending. He warned that severe cuts to aid programs could have destabilizing consequences, emphasizing that humanitarian assistance is also crucial for security.
Grandi’s appeal comes as EU nations weigh significant military budget increases in response war in Ukraine and broader security concerns. While defense expenditures rise, international aid organizations are grappling with severe financial shortfalls, forcing them to scale back essential services for vulnerable populations.
The UN official stressed that stability and security are interconnected, warning that neglecting aid in favor of military spending could ultimately make the world less safe. His call highlights the growing dilemma facing European policymakers as they balance security priorities with global humanitarian responsibilities.
