Canada Files WTO Complaint Against US Over New Tariffs

The World Trade Organization (WTO) announced Wednesday that Canada has officially lodged a complaint against the United States over new tariff measures imposed on Canadian goods. Canada argues that the 25% tariffs on non-energy goods and 10% tariffs on energy products violate the 1994 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the WTO’s Trade Facilitation Agreement.

The tariffs, originally signed into effect by President Donald Trump on February 1, targeted imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. While the US temporarily suspended implementation for a month to allow Canada and Mexico time to enhance border security, the tariffs officially came into force on Tuesday. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the US move as a trade war, vowing to impose retaliatory tariffs on US goods worth C$155 billion ($107 billion).

This latest dispute adds to mounting tensions between the two countries, with Canada seeking WTO consultations to challenge the US measures. The outcome of this complaint could have significant implications for North American trade relations, as both countries brace for an escalating economic confrontation.
