Ontario Threatens 25% Tariffs on US Electricity Over Trump’s Trade Policies

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the province will impose a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the US if President Donald Trump’s tariffs remain in place. In a letter to officials from New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, Ford warned that Ontario could further increase charges or even cut off power supply if necessary.

The Trump administration has imposed 25% tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico, prompting strong reactions. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized the move as a “very dumb thing to do,” vowing that Canada will impose reciprocal tariffs on $155 billion worth of US goods. The first wave, targeting $30 billion, will take effect immediately, with the rest following in 21 days.
