HRC 58th Session: Algerian Magramane Meets with ILO Director-General in Geneva

Lounès Magramane, Secretary General of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, met with Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labor Organization (ILO), on Thursday in Geneva. This meeting took place during the high-level segment of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC), as reported in a communiqué from the ministry.

During the meeting, Magramane presented the Director-General with an official letter regarding Algeria’s accession to the “Global Coalition for Social Justice” initiative, reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to this cause and its readiness to share its experiences in social justice with coalition partners, as noted in the communiqué.

The two parties discussed strategies to enhance bilateral cooperation with this specialized UN organization.

Additionally, Magramane outlined “the ambitious social protection policy of the Algerian state under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune,” emphasizing the efforts made to promote social dialogue and safeguard workers’ rights through significant legislative reforms and concrete measures.

He also urged the ILO Director-General to support initiatives to grant Palestine observer state status within the ILO, in accordance with a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly.

The Secretary General further highlighted Algeria’s ongoing commitment to supporting development efforts across the African continent, particularly in its role as Vice President of the African Union (AU) Commission, the communiqué concluded.
