Hassi Messaoud (Ouargla) – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed today that the historic national decision to nationalize hydrocarbons in 1971 was a crucial step toward achieving full national independence and extending the spirit of Algeria’s liberation struggle.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui during the commemoration of the 69th anniversary of the founding of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) and the 54th anniversary of the nationalization of hydrocarbons, Tebboune emphasized the significance of the decision taken by Algeria’s leadership under the late President Houari Boumediene.
“This decision reflects a sincere will, a patriotic vision, and a deep loyalty to the message of November and the sacrifices of our noble martyrs,” said Tebboune. He added that this move remains a testament to Boumediene’s dedication to preserving Algeria’s social character and safeguarding its wealth and sovereignty.
The president paid tribute to the engineers, technicians, and workers who, driven by patriotic determination, overcame challenges following the restoration of national sovereignty. Their efforts ensured the uninterrupted production and marketing of Algeria’s energy resources, defying predictions of economic setbacks.
Tebboune also highlighted the nationalization decision as a bold step toward economic independence and full control over the country’s natural wealth and resources. He honored the sacrifices of labor movement pioneers, including iconic figures such as Aissat Idir and the devoted trade unionist Abdelhak Benhamouda, who gave their lives for Algeria’s independence and sovereignty.
