A3+ Group Calls for “Immediate, Unconditional” Ceasefire in DRC

NEW YORK (United Nations) — The A3+ group at the United Nations Security Council (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone and Guyana) underscored on Wednesday the urgency of achieving an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), noting that there is “no military solution” to this conflict.
“It is more urgent than ever to achieve an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in eastern DRC,” declared Somalia’s UN representative, Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, who spoke on behalf of the A3+ during a Security Council session dedicated to the situation in DRC.
In this respect, the A3+ group urged all parties to “accept a ceasefire,” to “commit to laying down their arms” and to “create conditions conducive to a negotiated political solution,” emphasizing the need to “respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC.”
“It is clear that there is no military solution to this conflict,” added the Somalia representative to the UN.
