Security Council : Libya’s Stability Hinges on Inclusive Political Solution

NEW YORK (United Nations) — The A3+ group at the Security Council said on Wednesday that Libya’s stability and security rested on a political solution led “by Libyans and for Libyans,” calling for effective involvement of the people in the ongoing political process.
“Libya’s long-term stability and security crucially depend on a Libyan-owned and Libyan-led political solution,” stated Carolyn Rodrigues, Guyana’s representative to the Security Council, speaking on behalf of the A3+ group (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone and Guyana).
The ambassador stressed the critical need to ensure all segments of the Libyan people have a voice in the country’s ongoing political process.
She added that the participation of the Libyan people, particularly of women and youth, was of paramount importance to restore confidence.
The A3+, while noting an improvement in Libya’s situation, nevertheless express concern about the limited progress made regarding the adoption of an electoral law allowing for national elections in the country.
“The holding of these elections remains one of the key issues for addressing the impasse in Libya and for ensuring that the Libyan people are fully consulted to determine their future,” the A3+ group said.
The ambassador continued: “We urge the United Nations, and UNSMIL in particular, to intensify efforts to support Libya in advancing on this critical matter.”
