Car Rams Into Crowd in Munich, Injuring 20 Ahead of Security Conference

MUNICH – At least 20 people were injured, some critically, after a car plowed into a crowd in Munich on Thursday, just as the city prepares to host a high-profile security conference attended by U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Police confirmed that the driver of the Mini Cooper has been secured and no longer poses a threat. Authorities are investigating whether the incident was deliberate or a tragic accident caused by confusion between the accelerator and brake. The crash occurred near Munich’s central train station, about 1.5 kilometers from the security conference venue, where security is already heightened ahead of Germany’s federal elections next week.

Local reports indicate that those injured were possibly participating in a strike at the time of the incident. Witnesses described scenes of panic, with some people crying and trembling on the ground. A large-scale police operation is underway, as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
