China Welcomes Trump-Putin Call, Backs Peace Talks on Ukraine

China on Thursday praised the phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine, state media reported. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Beijing supports increased communication between Russia and the U.S. on global issues and reaffirmed that dialogue is the only viable solution to the crisis.

Trump described his conversation with Putin as “lengthy and highly productive,” announcing that their delegations had agreed to “start negotiations immediately” to end the nearly three-year war in Ukraine. He also held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and later suggested a potential meeting with Putin in Saudi Arabia for Ukraine peace talks.

Beijing reiterated its consistent position on promoting peace efforts, stating that it backs all initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict. The diplomatic push comes after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged that restoring Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders was unrealistic and that NATO membership for Kyiv would not be part of a negotiated settlement.
